Kuwait is situated at the north-west head of the Arabian Peninsula and covers over 17,000 sq. kms. Nine Gulf islands are included in Kuwait's territory. The bulk of the surface area is low-lying plateau, rising westward to the Iraq-Saudi Arabian border. Over 90% of the land is stony desert and most of the population lives along the coastal strip.

The climate is that of dry desert, with frequent dust storms and scant rainfall. Very hot and humid during the summer months (45°C and 90% humidity). Cooler during winter. Frosts are not uncommon.
