Overview

The Federated States of Micronesia consist of four major island groups, Pohnpei, Chuuk, Kosrae and Yap situated in the North Pacific Ocean (often referred to as the Caroline Islands) and have a total surface area of 700 sq kms spread over 2.6 million sq kms of the western Pacific. The 607 islands vary from high mountainous terrain to coral atolls. Fishing and farming provide income but the USA supports the islands. Tourist attractions include diving, especially on war-time wrecks in Chuuk, and ancient ruins in Pohnpei.

The climate is tropical with heavy year-round rainfall and occasional typhoons.
