Overview

Located in southeast Asia and consists of two regions - the Peninsula or West Malaysia, and East Malaysia, situated 650 kms to the East. West Malaysia occupies the southern half of the Malay Peninsula; it is about 800 kms long and 300 kms wide. East Malaysia occupies almost 200,000 sq. kms and is situated on the northwestern part of Borneo. It consists of the states, Sarawak in the west, Sabah in the east. Most of West Malaysia is covered by tropical rainforest, including the central highland that runs north to south down the peninsula. The east coast is sandy.

Malaysia's equatorial climate is influenced by two monsoon periods, the northeast (November or December to March) and southwest (June to September or early October). Rainfall is high with a mean annual of 100 inches - lower in West Malaysia and high in Sabah. Relative humidity averages 80 to 85 percent.
