Overview

Situated on the north African Mediterranean coast, Libya covers almost 1,740,000 sq. kms. About 93% of the country is arid and part of the Saharan Plateau. The north west is comparatively fertile, which makes it the most populous and agricultural region, particularly around Tripoli. Apart from a few scattered oases, there is little natural water although artesian wells supply almost two thirds of the country.

The harsh climate of the Saharan interior is modified along the coast. Rain falls October to March but is concentrated along the coast. The northern regions are mild in winter (Jan) and warm in summer (average 27°C).
