Overview

Located in the Middle East and occupying over 20,000 sq kms of land in clearly-defined area drawn up by the Arab-Israeli armistice of 1949. The country is long and narrow, with the southern area desert (60% of the total land). The interior is mountainous dropping in the east to below sea level. The Dead Sea is between Israel and Jordan and has no outlet. The West Bank and the Golan Heights are disputed land.

The climate is Mediterranean in the north and centre with hot, dry summers and warm, wet winters. In Jerusalem temperatures vary from 9°C in January to 24°C in July.
