Overview

Iceland is a large volcanic island in the North Atlantic Ocean covering 103,000 sq. kms. There are over 22 volcanoes on the island. Glaciers cover 10% of the land and hot springs discharge at over 250 sites. Fishing and tourism provide income. Exploitation of hydro-electricity and geothermal resources is of increasing importance and supports industry such as aluminum smelting. The majority of the population lives along the coast.

The climate is variable but largely cool, temperate oceanic, moderated by the Gulf Stream and prevailing south-westerly winds. Temperatures in Reykjavik vary between 1°C in January and 11°C in July.
