Overview

Finland is situated in northern Europe and one third of the country lies above the Arctic Circle. It is predominantly a low-lying country with over 60,000 lakes and rivers. Over half the population lives in the southern most regions. The climate is extreme in regions north of the Arctic Circle with temperatures falling below minus 30°C in the six-month winter period. May to July is the 73 day Midnight Sun time when temperatures can rise to 27°C. Summers are mild and short. Temperatures in Helsinki range from minus 6°C in January to 17°C in July.
