Eritrea is located along the Red Sea, covering 125,000 sq. kms of what was formerly part of Ethiopia. The central highlands run north/south dividing the western lowlands from the eastern coastal lowlands. The highlands are cut by deep river valleys. The southern coastal strip forms part of the Danakil desert.

The climate varies from remaining hot along the coast (average temp. 30°C) to cooler temperatures in Asmara. The wet season is from June to October with a prolonged dry season.
