Tick-borne infections in 2 southern counties in UK

Two rare tick-borne infections that were acquired in two southern counties have been reported by Public Health England: A resident of Hampshire is receiving treatment in hospital after contracting what is suspected to be tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) – the second only case in the UK. While the risk of TBE infection in the UK remains low, testing performed on deer near where the person lived showed ‘likely evidence’ of TBE transmission. In the other incident, the country’s first case of the parasitic infection babesiosis has been confirmed in a resident of Devon. Babesiosis is usually a mild infection, however it is more prone to be severe in people who are immunocompromised. Read More
