Rabies death in Italian tourist

ProMED reports on the death last month of an Italian businessman who was bitten by a rabid dog while visiting a popular tourist area in the NE of Zanzibar (Kiwengwa beach). He had no rabies vaccines prior to travel (as they weren’t compulsory according to the report) but he was administered wound treatment and rabies vaccines post-exposure, but no rabies immunoglobulin – he returned to Italy following his holiday. The ProMED report also noted the man was immunocompromised (corticosteroid therapy for autoimmune disease). Read more.
