Pakistan Polio reporting suffers during pandemic

No wild poliovirus cases were recorded by the GPEI in either Pakistan or Afghanistan, however cVDPV2 was detected: four cases in Nangarhar province, one in Kunar (Afghanistan) and one in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtoon province. Last week, as the high transmission season nears, the GPEI released the report ‘Polio eradication in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic’ in which the agency notes that ‘maintaining quality surveillance has proven difficult, leading to possible knowledge gaps on the extent of polio virus transmission’.
