Netherlands experience increase in W meningococcal strain

There has been a large rise in the number of meningococcal meningitis infections (type W) recorded, with at least 57 people ending up in intensive care after becoming infected, and 11 deaths this year. Up until 2015, the average per year was only four cases with no deaths. A vaccine which protects against the W strain is being introduced into the immunisation program for children at ages 14 months and 14 years. Read more
