Overview

Occupying the southern part of the Korean peninsula, South Korea borders North Korea, and it is surrounded by sea. Its total area is 100,000 sq. kms and population is 51 million. Dominated by rugged mountain ranges, the majority of people live in the coastal plains which cover only one fifth of the country.

Summers are warm and wet and winters dry and cold. Typhoons can occur in summer. South Korea has a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate. It is also affected by the East Asian monsoon. In the capital Seoul, the average January temperature range is −7°C to 1°C. The average August temperature range is 22°C to 30°C.
