Overview

Portugal is located in south-western Europe on the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula and covers 88,000 sq. kms. The north of this long, narrow country is mountainous and this area gives way to the coastal lowlands, drained by the River Douro. The south of the country is gently undulating. Generally, the north is more populous than the south. Portugal is the world's biggest producer of cork. Fishing, tourism, textiles and wine production provide income.

The climate varies from cool, Atlantic maritime in the north to warmer Mediterranean in the south. From June to August there is little rainfall. The temperature in Lisbon varies from 11°C in January to 24°C in July.
