New Zealand, southeast of Australia in the southern Pacific consists of two major islands of volcanic origin with mountainous regions and several large plains. New Zealand has a total land mass of 268,000 sq. km with approximately 15,000km of coastline.

The north varies in climate and vegetation from subtropical in the northern peninsula to temperate areas facing the South Island. The South Island includes snowfields and fjords and is cooler south of its Alps. Summer is mild to warm in the North Island and mild in the south and winters are cool. Most rain falls in winter.
