The Falkland Islands, which include the two main islands of East and West Falklands and about 200 small islands, lie in the south Atlantic Ocean, 772 kms northeast of Cape Horn and cover just over 12,000 sq. kms. The islands are rocky and hilly with some boggy undulating plains.

The climate is cold with strong westerly winds, particularly in spring. Rain falls at least 180 days per year. Temperature in Port Stanley varies between 9°C in January and 2°C in July.
