Overview

Colombia is situated in the extreme northwest of South America with a Caribbean and Pacific coastline and island territories in both. The land area is 1,141,000 sq. kms.

The climate varies according to altitude although predominantly tropical. Where rainfall is very high, in the Amazonian lowlands, Magdalena Valley and west, northwest, Pacific coast, rainforests proliferate. However, higher elevations have a permanent snow cover.
