Overview

Bulgaria is situated in south-eastern Europe and traversed west-east by the Balkan Mountains. Fertile undulating lowlands (the Danube Plain) cover one third of the land area. One third of the country is woodland.

In the south, a Mediterranean climate prevails with hot summers and cold winters. The north is colder than the south. Temperatures in Sofia in winter average minus 2°C and in summer, (July) 20°C.
