Australia is an island continent, south east of Asia, with the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Indian Ocean to the west, the Arafura Sea, Timor Sea and Torres Strait to the north and Bass Strait to the south. There are about 37,000 km of coastline surrounding a continent of diverse environments.

The majority of Australia is dry, with desert covering much of the centre and west. Tropical rainforests exist in the north and northeast, and temperate conditions exist on the east coast and southern fringe where the bigger cities are located. The country is generally flat with a low dividing range in the east.
