General Information
Size: 513,115 sq. kms. Population: approx. 60 million. Thailand is located in Southeast Asia, between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. The country consists of two broad geographic areas: a larger main section in the north (Indochine peninsula) and a smaller peninsular section in the south (Malayan peninsula). It is bounded by Burma, Laos and Cambodia. Capital City:
Bangkok (pop. 5.6 million). Bangkok is hot and humid for most of the year, receiving about 60 inches of rain.
Weather patterns are influenced by the monsoons. Beginning in May, the warm, humid air masses of the southwest monsoon flow northeastward over the region from the Indian Ocean, depositing precipitation. Rainfall reaches a maximum in September. The wind direction changes between November and February, when the northeast monsoon brings cool, relatively dry air over much of the country.
Temperatures range between 25C and 29C for much of the year. Greatest fluctuations occur in the north where frosts may occur at altitude.
