National Medical Advisor

Dr Tony Gherardin, National Medical Advisor MB,BS (Melb), MPH (Monash), DipRACOG, FRACGP, Cert Av Med

Dr Tony Gherardin has returned to the Travel Doctor Group as National Medical Advisor & brings many years of travel medicine experience. He recently spent 4 years based in Bangkok as Regional Medical Director (Asia), for Australian Department of Immigration, & traveled constantly to review medical services & health matters in 24 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. He was a former National Medical Director for Travel Doctor Group in 1997-2000, a Medical Officer for the Australian Embassy in Beijing, 1994-1996, as well as Community Medical Officer on Cocos (Keeling) Islands, 1989 -1991 & Medical Director of TMVC Melbourne in 1992-1993. With a background in general practice & family medicine, Dr Gherardin has then worked in travel-related practice for over 15 years, & has travelled widely during that time. He has written & taught on travel medicine topics in a range of forums. He has been a member of ISTM & APTHS for many years.

State Medical Directors

Dr Sonny Lau MBBS, MRCP(UK), MPHTM

Medical Director, The Travel Doctor Melbourne Dr Lau is a medical graduate of the University of Melbourne. He has been working specifically in the travel medicine field since 1993. Prior to this Dr Lau worked in Hong Kong between 1985 to 1991. He then gained training in Infectious Diseases at the Fairfield Infectious Diseases Hospital in Melbourne. He completed his Master of Public Health & Tropical Medicine at the James Cook University of North Queensland in Townsville in 1998. He is a certified medical examiner for recreational diving medical. His special interest is tropical diseases in returned travellers.

Dr Kristin Roe BMBS (Flinders), MPH&TM, FRACGP, FACNEM

Medical Director, The Travel Doctor-TMVC Adelaide. Dr Kristin Roe grew up in Germany beginning her medical studies at Freiburg University & completing her degree at Flinders Medical School in Adelaide in 1990. Prior to this, as a consequence of an adventurous mother she circumnavigated the globe by ship several times before her ninth birthday. During her school & student years she was fortunate to also travel extensively through Europe & northern Africa & later lived & studied in the United States for a year. It seems natural that she should work in Travel Medicine later in life! After two resident years at the Royal Adelaide Hospital she moved to Brisbane in 1992, working at the Royal Brisbane Hospital for a year, & then deciding to train as a General Practitioner. In 1996 she completed her Fellowship in General Practice. Over the following years, she worked part time for the Australian Defence Forces as well as in General Practice. In 2004 she completed her Fellowship in Nutritional & Environmental Medicine, & in 2008 she completed a Masters in Public Health & Tropical Medicine at James Cook University.

Dr John McDade MBBS, FRACGP

John graduated from the University of Queensland in 1981. Following residency at the Gold Coast Hospital, Southport, he worked extensively throughout remote & regional Queensland including 2 years with the Flying Surgical Service based in Longreach. This was followed by extensive general practice experience as principal of one of Brisbane’s leading GP surgeries. He has also worked as a Medical Advisor to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs & Health Services Australia prior to taking up his appointment as Medical Director of the Travel Doctor-TMVC in Brisbane. John is a member of the International Society of Travel Medicine & maintains a keen interest in preventative medicine, corporate health screening, & all aspects of travel medicine.

Dr Conrad Moreira MBBS MPH FAFPHM

After graduating from Sydney University, Conrad worked in emergency medicine for about 10 years including a stint in Cairns, Far North Queensland. He returned to Sydney in 1998 to complete a Masters in Public Health. He then worked for the NSW Department of Health, completing his Fellowship in Public Health Medicine in 2002, & was responsible for overseeing communicable disease control & immunisation programs in Western Sydney. Conrad has worked in travel medicine since 2007 & became the Medical Director of the Sydney Clinic in 2008. He is particularly interested in tropical diseases & in the health of refugees.

Dr Jennifer Sisson, MBBS MPH&TM FRACGP

Jenny completed her medical studies in 1990 at UWA, during which she undertook an elective at the Coast Province Hospital in Mombasa. She worked at Fremantle Hospital for 2 years, then in UK for 2 years, before travelling for 18 months. On returning to Australia in late 1995, Jenny completed GP training and worked for the next 10 years in both General Practice and Travel Medicine in Perth and Fremantle. In 2007 Jenny joined Travel Doctor and was instrumental in the establishment of our Perth clinic. Shortly after she completed a Masters of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (distinction) at James Cook University, Townsville and in 2008 she gained the ISTM Certificate of Travel Health at the APICTM conference in Melbourne. As well as travel medicine, Jenny perform recreational and commercial dive medicals, and is both AMSA and UKOOA accredited. She is a member of SPUMS, ISTM, APTHA, RACGP, and the AMA. Jenny does regular presentations for GP's, practice nurses, corporate clients, lunch time education sessions, adventure travel groups and presented on 'Specific Travel Vaccines' at the APICTM conference in Melbourne 2008.

Dr Peter Shannon, BA BMed(hons) DTM&H FRACGP

Peter grew up in Canberra and completed a Bachelor of Arts at ANU before medical studies at the University of Newcastle, NSW, including exchanges in Ghana and Zambia. He then enjoyed the life of a diplomatic spouse in Manila and returned to complete internship and hospital residency in Canberra. On posting in Paris, Peter worked as an Immigration Medical Clearance Officer; again returning to Canberra to gain his fellowship from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, and work as a GP. Prior to joining Travel Doctor TMVC he spent 4 ½ years in Bangkok working in refugee camps, embassy clinics and most recently in a Tuberculosis screening programme. During this time Peter completed a Graduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and is now embarking on a Master of Public Health.

Mr Brock Cambourne

Mr Camborne has been with the Travel Doctor-TMVC for 5 years, the last 3 as Executive General Manager. Prior to that he had a long background in the travel and tourism industry, having been Deputy Director for the Centre for Tourism Research, based at the University of Canberra, Chairman of the Tourism Industry Council, ACT & Region as well as running his own tourism business for a number of years.


National Client Manager

Mr Jeremy Limpens RN, MSN

Jeremy has a diverse OH&S and nursing career, including working for a ‘flying doctor’ service in Canada, on cruise ships in Alaska and the Caribbean, remote area nursing in the Arctic and outback Australia, intensive care and emergency nursing and health, and as the Health Safety and Security Coordinator for Australian Red Cross’s International Operations. Jeremy’s real life experience means he understands both the medical and business needs of Travel Doctor-TMVC clients and has first hand knowledge of what can befall ill-prepared travellers. His passions lie in providing practical advice and promoting best practice in travel health to help employers better protect staff travelling overseas. Jeremy’s working career is backed with strong academic credentials. He has a Bachelor of Nursing, a Masters in Emergency Nursing, and qualification in OH&S. He has lectured at Griffith University, Qld, and at the British Columbian Institute of Technology in Vancouver Canada in Health Sciences. He relishes the challenges of his work and being able to draw on his extensive experiences to advocate on behalf of corporate travellers.
