Human infections with Avian Influenza Egypt and Vietnam

The Ministry of Health and Population of Egypt has announced a new human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection. The case is a 2-year-old male from Suez Governorate, Ganain District. His symptoms began on 2 February and he was hospitalized at the Suez Fever Hospital on 3 February. He remains in a stable condition. Of the 54 cases confirmed to date in Egypt, 23 have been fatal.
The State-run online Lao Dong newspaper on 7th February has quoted health officials as saying that a 23-year-old man from Dam Ha district in the northern province of Quang Ninh, about 150 km from Hanoi had fallen ill and tests showed he carried the bird flu virus. This is the 2nd case of avian A/H5N1 influenza virus infection recorded in Viet Nam in 2009, bringing the total number of cases since 2003 to 108 (with 52 fatalities).
