Rabies on Bali Update
Monday, 19 October, 2009
New cases have been confirmed at Kubu on the Bali east coast and at Petang north of Ubud. So far no cases have been identified within the major cities of Ubud and Gianyar, and only a few on the outskirts of Denpasar the capital city, but cases now have occurred on all sides of these densely populated communities. So far seventeen people have died from rabies since the outbreak started at the end of last year.
Although the risks to tourists are very small, and the cost of anti-rabies vaccination is high, vaccination before travel should be considered as there is a shortage of vaccines on the island for post-exposure vaccination and supplies of the rabies immunoglobulin, which forms part of the emergency first treatment, are virtually non-existent
