Measles in Ireland (Mar10)
Tuesday, 9 March, 2010
The measles outbreak in the Republic of Ireland which first began in Aug 2009, is ongoing and the total number of cases notified is now 320; two thirds of whom were unvaccinated.
The outbreak began mainly among the Traveller and Roma [gypsy] communities and others who refused vaccination, however by Feb 2010, the spread to the general population has been considerable.
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR in infancy with a second dose pre-school (or at school in some cases.) Unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk .Two doses of MMR vaccine is required to give adequate protection.
