East Timor (also referred to as Timor-Leste) is a country in Southeast Asia which comprises the eastern half of the island Timor, the Oecussi (Ambeno) northwest portion of Timor and the small islands of Atauro and Jaco. East Timor experienced a difficult past with invasions and attempted colonisation, however this country now stands proudly as an independent state. A tropical climate envelopes the series of islands, of which tourists are still rare. With a culture spanning thousands of years of habitation, East Timor offers a rich cultural glimpse into island life.
