Zambia Typhoid Outbreak

Typhoid fever broke out in Kabwe in the Central Province of Zambia earlier this month associated with contaminated water sources and collapsed latrines following floods. Despite efforts by authorities to contain the outbreak cases continue to be reported and by 11th April numbers had reached over 140.  The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit has been called on to provide water bowsers in disease-prone areas as a preventive measure while efforts continue to educate communities on good sanitation and hygiene.

Travellers to Zambia should be vaccinated against typhoid fever bearing in mind that the vaccine is not fully protective and safe hygiene practices relating to food and water are essential.
