Typhoid fever in Samoa
The Health Ministry has recorded more than 100 cases of typhoid fever since April and investigations suggest that the spread may be due to food contamination. The ministry is looking at preventative measures such as licensing all food handlers in the country from shops to village stores, restaurants, food stalls and also mobile food sellers in villages.
Vaccination against typhoid is strongly advised for tourists but it is also important to pay attention to the rules regarding food and water hygiene.
